How do I win my H2H categories matchup this week?

Updated

In a nine-category head-to-head league you win the week by taking five categories, not all nine. So pick the five you're most likely to win, spend your pickups and lineup on those, and stop chasing the ones you're losing badly. That's punting for one week, and it's usually a better use of your pickups than trying to be good at everything.

Five categories win the week

Most ESPN head-to-head categories leagues score nine stats: points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, threes, field goal percentage, free throw percentage and turnovers, where fewer is better. Each one you win against your opponent this week counts as a win. Win five and you've won the matchup, which is the result Fantasy IQ plans for.

In ESPN's Each Category scoring every category also counts in your standings record, so 6-3 beats 5-4. Either way, a category you lose by a mile costs no more than one you lose by a hair. The work is in the categories that are close.

On Monday, sort every category into three piles

Look at your roster against your opponent's for the whole week, counting how many games each player has left. Then put each category in one pile:

  • Hold: you're well ahead and should stay ahead. Don't spend moves here.
  • Flip: you're close or slightly behind and one or two good pickups could swing it. This is where your moves go.
  • Punt: you're far behind, or your opponent's roster is built for it. Give it up this week.

Punt for this week, not for the whole season

Most punting advice is about the draft: build a team that ignores assists or free throws all year. Weekly punting is different. You look at this week's opponent and decide which categories aren't worth chasing for these seven days. Next week, against someone else, the answer can change.

Once you punt a category, stop valuing it. A center who shoots 50% from the line is a fine pickup in a week you've given up free throws.

Midweek, check what's still winnable

By Wednesday or Thursday, part of the week is already banked. A category where you're ahead with fewer games left for your opponent is close to locked. A category where you're behind but have more games left may still flip. Percentages move less late in the week, because the shots already taken count for most of the total.

Move your pickups to whichever close categories are still in play, and drop a category you were chasing if it's now out of reach.

Losing 5-4 a lot? Spend your moves on one or two categories

A close loss usually means one category was a coin flip and went the wrong way. Spreading pickups across every stat rarely fixes that. Putting them all on the one or two categories closest to flipping often does.

The same goes for playoff weeks, when one loss ends your season: decide your five early and use every pickup you have on them.

Fantasy IQ does this for your own league

ChatGPT can't see your league, so it can only give general advice. Fantasy IQ is a Chrome extension that reads your ESPN league as you browse. Its win plan looks at your roster and this week's opponent, works out the chance of winning each category from the games left, and lays out plans that hold, flip or punt, each with its chance to win the week. Rankings and projections tell you who's good; this tells you what to do this week. Works with ESPN head-to-head categories leagues.

Common questions

How many categories do I need to win a H2H categories matchup?
More than half. In a nine-category league that's five. In an eight-category league, five as well.
What does punting a category mean?
Giving up on winning it, on purpose, so your roster moves and pickups go to the categories you can win. You can punt for a whole season from the draft, or just for one week against one opponent.
Which category should I punt this week?
The one you're furthest behind in once you count the games each team has left, especially if your opponent's roster is built for it. Free throw percentage, turnovers and assists are common punts, but the right answer depends on this week's opponent.
Can ChatGPT tell me how to win my fantasy basketball matchup?
It can explain the strategy, but it can't see your league, your opponent's roster or the games each player has left. A tool that reads your ESPN league, like the Fantasy IQ Chrome extension, can.
